Andy, Bill, and Matt give their final thoughts on the divisive, classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. They provide their grades of the show and their updated anime rankings. Most importantly, Bill reveals his pick for Season 8! It’s maybe not what you’re expecting. Big thanks again to Matt for joining us this season! We are looking forward to all working together again next season!
Andy is headed to Gen Con in Indianapolis this weekend, so our final discussion of Neon Genesis Evangelion will be pushed back a week. Until then, enjoy one of our Tooning In episodes, our Patreon mini-series where we discuss the first episode of an anime series. This episode features the classic board game commercial show, After School Dice Club. It’s Andy’s pick. Blame him.
We finally made it, fans! We are at The End of Evangelion. Literally. It’s the movie we review and discuss. This is the alternate ending to the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, and we have a LOT of thoughts. It begins with a song and ends with a sigh of relief. This took hours to record and many more hours to edit, so we hope you enjoy.
Do you hate the ending of Evangelion? So do we. Do we spend an hour just getting angry at it? Absolutely not. This may be one of our best discussions about the end of an anime as we break down the symbolism, storytelling, and visual elements that make Episodes 25 and 26 of Neon Genesis Evangelion so contested, yet unique. We still have two more Evangelion episodes to go this season, and we have a LOT to say here and in those two!
Matt has the unenviable task of trying to make sense of Episode 24 of Neon Genesis Evangelion, “The Last Cometh.” The short version of this episode involves a new pilot, LGBTQ+ content, Gendo’s unwashed hand, an actual mech battle, and a love lost. Trust me, it doesn’t make much more sense than that, but listen to us try to figure out the last episode before the anime’s iconic mess of a conclusion.
Today we have a very special bonus blooper episode for you all! Here’s all the cut content, crude jokes, and mistakes from the first part of Season 7 (and a little bit from other episodes). As usual, listener discretion is advised. Enjoy!
It’s Rei’s turn at a spotlight episode. Like Asuka’s in the previous episode, this one is part depressing, part confusing. With only three episodes left in the original series, how in the world are they going to close this off? Spoiler warning…not well. Enjoy our breakdown of Episode 23 of Neon Genesis Evangelion, “Tears.”
This week we tackle a somewhat flawed, but deep episode focused around Asuka. Setting out to prove that she is a worthy pilot, Asuka finds herself at the mercy of the next angel. Will she survive the attack? Find out in our review of Episode 22, “Staying Human.”
We have so few episodes left, and we get a whole episode of background information. The crew have mixed feelings about this one, and we may have gotten off track more than once. Join us on a journey to learn more about NERV in the aptly titled Episode 21, “The Birth of NERV.”
Episode 20 is…well, it’s an episode of Evangelion. It’s mostly recap and Shinji losing his mind after being absorbed by Unit 01. We do our best this week! Hope you enjoy our not-so-deep dive into Episode 20, “Of the Shape of Hearts and Humans.”
